America Is Not A Christian Nation
Time to push back against that false prophecy — starting with Josh Hawley
It might bruise the pious sensibilities of Sen. Josh Hawley, but as one of his non-believer constituents, I’ve got a little High Holidays message for him:
I’m just as much of an American as you are, pal. And I’m fed up with hearing you suggest otherwise — on my dime.
That might seem like a boorishly ungrateful response to the pleasant season’s greetings Hawley posted Tuesday:
Happy Rosh Hashanah to all who celebrate! Erin and I wish you and your family a very blessed new year.
Why, thank you.
But Jews don’t need Hawley’s kindness or good wishes. What they need — and must demand — is respect as full partners, with no asterisks, in the American experiment.
The same is true for atheists, agnostics, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Sikhs and everyone who keeps their spirituality to themselves. Including the millions of Christians who prefer their religion stay out of their government.
Christian Nationalism is a threat to our American way of life.
So, we need to look closely at Hawley’s words and see them for what they are:
Marching orders.
