CARDINALS PARTNER WITH HOMOPHOBIC HATERS TO SPREAD THE LOVE OF JESUS
It’s part of the evolution of ‘Christian Day at the Ballpark’ from charity to big bucks
The St. Louis Cardinals’ 31st annual “Christian Day at the Ballpark” – which happens tomorrow – has a new sponsor: The “He Gets Us” national juggernaut that’s spending more than $100 million this year to promote its version of the gospel, much of it through advertising on sports events.
A major part of the “He Gets Us” mission is its promotion of the right-wing culture war. Tax records show, for example, that Servant Foundation – its parent not-for-profit group – has given more than $80 million in the past five years to the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), an organization labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center because of its strident anti-LGBTQ agenda.
So, it’s especially ironic that “He Gets Us” will present “Christian Day” precisely 18 hours after the Cardinals host “Pride Night” sponsored by Mission Taco Joint. Normally the two events would not be mutually exclusive – the religious composition of the LGBTQ community does not differ significantly from the public at large.
Nothing shouts insincerity quite like following up the promotion of LGBTQ rights with counter-programming by those who condemn the “sin” of homosexuality. And if that wasn’t enough, the arrival of the deep pockets of “He Gets Us” signals the latest rocket stage of the exploitation of what began three decades ago as the charity of a single Cardinal fan.
It's quite a story of changing times and not the best reflection on the corporate Cardinals. So, don’t count on reading or hearing about it in the mainstream media.
