Straying from the herd on the issues of the day.

Thanks for checking out my Substack.

I’ve spent more than half a century in journalism and politics—something my young campaign aides begged me not to mention when I ran for Congress last year. But I think I’ve learned a thing or two, and I believe it’s important to use that experience to stand up for what I believe. Now more than ever.

This Substack will focus mostly on politics and media, though I reserve the right to indulge my passion for sports when the moment moves me.

Maybe the nicest compliment I’ve received over the years is being called a truth-teller. I’ve always prided myself on being allergic to spin, groupthink, political correctness and fear of repercussion. That’s what I’ll keep aiming for here.

I don’t follow a fixed schedule. I write when there’s something to say—which, lately, is often. And I don’t think I’ll be running out of material anytime soon.

The daily content is free to everyone. But I hope you’ll consider supporting this work with a paid subscription, which includes access to a weekly Substack Live session where we can interact and exchange ideas. Even though I’ve labeled this a “soapbox,” I see it more as a space for conversation than monologue.

By the way, if you had a paid subscription before and it wasn’t fulfilled because of my abrupt switch to campaign mode last year, it will absolutely be honored going forward.

Lastly, I’d be especially grateful to those considering a Founding Membership. For $250, it includes a lifetime paid subscription and five one-year gift subscriptions to pass along to friends—or to foes you’d like to annoy.

→ Subscribe for free—or support the work by becoming a paid subscriber. Either way, I’m glad you’re here!
